From Family Fog to Family Focus: The Power of Having a Family Vision

I’ve observed in my work with families and youth that humans often make assumptions about how their family life will unfold – what it will look like, which traditions will endure, and how communication will flow. As parents, we often bring our own family histories to the table without even realizing it. Unfortunately, this can lead to conflict, misunderstanding, and a lack of communication. However, there's a powerful tool to align everyone's expectations and cultivate the family culture of your dreams: creating a family vision.

In my coaching program, EmpoweredParent, I guide families through this transformative activity early on. We begin by brainstorming what they envision for their family in an ideal world. Common themes that emerge include harmony, calmness, mutual support, and effective communication.

Once we've identified these broad aspirations, it's crucial to involve the entire family. This inclusivity not only fosters a sense of belonging but also validates everyone's thoughts and feelings. And what better way to kick off this discussion than by making it enjoyable! Consider ordering pizza or preparing ice cream sundaes as a special treat. Break out the oversized paper and colorful markers, ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, feels empowered to contribute. Younger children can express themselves through drawings, while teens can articulate their ideas more verbally.

Begin by reflecting on the activities that bring joy and strengthen bonds within your family – think of cherished traditions and outings that are unique to your household.

Next, delve into the core values that underpin your family's happiness. What sets your family apart? How do you communicate with one another? How do you navigate conflicts? Who's responsible for which chores? Is honesty non-negotiable? Envision the atmosphere you want your home to exude.

Then, consolidate these ideas by identifying recurring themes and grouping them together.

This process will naturally yield statements that encapsulate your family's ethos, such as:

  • "In our family, we embrace adventure and curiosity."

  • "We communicate respectfully and compassionately."

  • "Supporting one another is our top priority."

  • "We share responsibilities and help each other with chores."

To truly bring your family vision to life, I invite you to join EmpoweredParent. In this program, you'll receive personalized guidance and support to implement your vision effectively, fostering deeper connections and a more fulfilling family life. Take the first step towards building the family of your dreams today!
